PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Christmas, a time for family and reflection for many people, is much different this year.

Roughly 300,000 Americans will have an empty seat at the table this Christmas, and many others will be alone, isolated by a viral particle that has brought out the worst in many of us.

But, there is another side to the coin. COVID-19 has taught us that we are all the same despite race, religion, wealth or personal preference.

The virus can attack at any time and the irresponsibility of others can directly impact our own health, but thoughtfulness can save countless lives.

In my profession, medical school admissions are at an all-time high. Hundreds of thousand of young people who have been unfairly scapegoated as thoughtless and uncaring have watched as physicians decades older risked their lives during the pandemic.

Stay safe, and we will get through this together.
