KYW Medical Report: Depression more often unrecognized in men

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Depression affects on average one out of eight people in the course of their lives, but the coronavirus pandemic has clearly increased the rate of depression and anxiety in both men and women.

However, depression often goes unrecognized in men.

Recently, physicians have raised concerns that many cases may be going unrecognized because men with depression often have vague symptoms.

Certainly, there can be feelings of sadness or emptiness, but depression in men is often marked by fatigue, headache, digestive issues and difficulty keeping up with responsibilities. They may even try to hide depression from their family and their doctors because they are embarrassed.

Anger, aggression, and self-medicating with alcohol and drugs can all be warning signs of depression in men.
