KYW Medical Report: Disparities in US pregnancy complications

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — In the U.S., Black women are three times more likely to die from a pregnancy-related issue than white women.

In the vast majority of cases, pregnancies go well, but in those cases where there are issues, the impact is great. This is why it is important to recognize issues as early as possible. Prenatal care is critical, and the earlier that counseling and medical care begins, the better.

In the U.S., Black women are at greater risk of pregnancy-related death. This group of women is more prone to preeclampsia, which is associated with high blood pressure.

A significant issue is also access to care. With 60% of pregnancy-related deaths avoidable, it is important to not only have regular exams but recognize important issues.

Public education, as well as a partnership with a woman and her provider, are the best weapons we have to reduce the chances of a bad outcome.
