KYW Medical Report: Mental illnesses rise during pandemic

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — As the coronavirus pandemic enters its second year, the impact on mental health may be greater than previously thought.

The pandemic has created new barriers for people already suffering from mental illness and substance abuse. The numbers that we are seeing are dramatic: During the pandemic, about four in 10 adults in the U.S. have reported symptoms of anxiety or depressive disorder.

Comparatively, just one in 10 adults reported these symptoms between January and June of 2019.

A recent survey also detailed the most common issues: Difficulty sleeping or eating impacted almost one-third of respondents. Twelve percent reported an increase in alcohol consumption or substance use. And 10% said they have worry and stress over the coronavirus.

These may just be estimates, but the problems are real.
