PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — When it comes to COVID-19, do more mutations make a virus more dangerous?
Omicron is getting a great deal of attention due to the fact that it has so many mutations. Certainly, the number of mutations increases the chances for change — both good and bad.
That is a key point: Most mutations are harmless. But when not harmless, as in the case of the delta variant, mutations can be a huge problem.
Mutations gave delta the ability to rapidly spread. We are going to learn more about omicron as time goes on — we are already seeing some of its impact.
Remember, mutations will continue to occur as long as the virus is thriving out there.
