KYW Medical Report: How to navigate an unvaccinated school year

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — COVID-19 is an opportunist. It continuously looks for openings to spread.

As the school year approaches, many parents are concerned that their unvaccinated children may be exposed to the virus and get sick themselves, as well as become carriers that spread the virus to the community — whether outwardly sick or not.

In the absence of vaccination, the best protection for the unvaccinated remains social distancing and mask-wearing. The FDA is studying the safety and efficacy of vaccines in children, which will be a major help.

For adults who have not been vaccinated and are hesitant, they are at greater risk of contracting the virus once school begins. The safety of the vaccines has been well established, and no time is better than the present to get vaccinated to reduce spread.
