PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Many people are asking the same question: How am I getting COVID-19 even though I have been vaccinated?

The hope had been that an effective vaccine would snuff out the virus. The vaccine is actually working as designed — if exposed, people who are vaccinated are more than 10 times less likely to get sick enough to be hospitalized than the unvaccinated.

However, the COVID-19 virus is still with us because not everyone has bought into getting vaccinated. Vaccines for everything from polio and smallpox to measles and mumps worked because they were virtually universally accepted.

If they faced the misinformation surrounding the COVID-19 vaccine, those viruses would have thrived, too. In fact, there is a fear in the medical community about what could happen if those vaccines that have been widely accepted may face similar misinformation campaigns going forward.
