KYW Medical Report: A slow metabolism doesn’t have to mean weight gain

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Worried about weight gain over 40? New information suggests it does not have to happen.

There is a common theory that as your metabolism slows with age, it can lead to weight gain, but according to some very interesting work from the University of Texas, you can fight this.

There are several key steps: When you exercise, try to alternate high energy versus low energy. For example, turn up the treadmill speed and incline, and turn it down in various intervals to recover. And, incorporate weight lifting into your routine several times a week.

When it comes to diet, increase the protein and drink plenty of water.

Finally — and this is tough for many people who are at a desk all day — move around often. Do not be sedentary.
