PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Scientists are concerned that the U.S. could be missing an opportunity to contain the coronavirus.
It has been well established that states with the highest vaccination rates are having the fewest COVID-19 cases. Additionally, hospitalizations are down in those states because people do not get nearly as sick after being vaccinated.
Epidemiologists are concerned about the states with lower vaccination rates. The coronavirus has shown it can mutate in those who are infected and very sick.
In certain parts of the country, where a significant number of people are still not vaccinated, not only are they at greater risk to die, but they also serve as an opportunity for the virus to change and potentially learn how to outsmart our vaccines.
If that happens, even those who have been vaccinated and live in states with high vaccination rates are once again at risk of reliving the past.
