KYW Medical Report: What to do if infected with COVID-19 in between vaccine doses

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A growing number of people are getting vaccinated, but what should you do if you are infected with COVID-19 while waiting for a second dose?

If you contract COVID-19 after your first dose of a two-dose vaccine, you should wait until you have recovered from acute illness and have cleared isolation guidelines before being vaccinated again.

Because there's a risk of infecting others, you shouldn't break your isolation prematurely to complete your vaccine sequence.

According to CDC, you can delay your second dose up to 42 days after the first without necessarily sacrificing effectiveness. This is not the best option — the studies were based on specific time windows, but quarantine protocol must be followed if you have a COVID-19 infection.
