PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The study of memory is one of the hottest areas in medicine, and there are many reasons why.
There is a natural curiosity about memory that we all possess, but there is also a rush to try to understand dementia and how to either prevent it or slow it down.
The latest development is in the journal Neuron. Researchers at Stanford University have uncovered why humans — in fact, many animals — developed memory in the first place.
According to the researchers, animals needed a GPS system of sorts to retrace steps for valuable resources, like water and food.
They say this was the initial layer that has served as the foundation in human development.
