LINDENWOLD, N.J. (KYW Newsradio) — An elementary school in Camden County canceled classes on Wednesday after a fire broke out at the building the night before, and students will learn remotely for the next few days.

Fire crews responded to Lindenwold School 4 on Gibbsboro Road around 8 p.m. Tuesday and found smoke coming from the building.

The Lindenwold School District said summer construction was ongoing at the facility. The Lindenwold Fire Department said contractors were working on the roof and the AC units at the time.

Smoke was filling up the building, officials said, so firefighters evacuated everyone and quickly got the fire under control. No one was injured.

The full extent of the damage is not yet clear.

Classes were canceled on what would have been the third day of school. Some families didn’t hear about the fire and only found out that the school was closed after they showed up to drop off their kids Wednesday morning.

The school district said classes will resume remotely from Thursday, Sept. 17, through Monday, Sept. 21. If parents need to pick up a Chromebook for their kids, they can do that on Thursday between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. or between 6 and 7 p.m.

Officials didn’t say what caused the fire, only that they determined it was “accidental.”
