SOUTH JERSEY (KYW Newsradio) — The mayor of Lumberton, New Jersey has been arrested and charged with driving under the influence after picking up her 2-year-old from day care, authorities said.

Police arrested Lumberton Mayor Gina LaPlaca at her home on Monday after investigators said a witness shared a video of her vehicle swerving in and out of a lane and nearly striking a utility pole.

According to court documents, officers showed up at her home and she admitted to drinking prior to picking up her child from day care. An open container was found during a search of her car. She was arrested and charged with endangering the welfare of a child.

LaPlaca had been working as a township administrator in Neptune but recently left that position.

In 2023, she was arrested for allegedly assaulting her husband, but he took responsibility for the incident and the charges were later dropped.

LaPlaca is scheduled to appear in court for the child endangerment charges on April 28.
