PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Two treasure hunters went magnet-fishing in the Cooper River over the weekend hoping to pull up some valuable metals. Instead, they found an explosive.

The fishermen threw their magnets over the side of the Cuthbert Boulevard Bridge in Cherry Hill early Saturday afternoon. Around 12:30 p.m., they struck… something.

When they saw what it was, they called the police.

Officials said the individuals hauled up an “old military-style projectile” that appeared to have been submerged for a long time. The shell was heavily crusted with so much grime that the shape was distorted, but it was clearly an explosive.

The Camden County Sheriff’s Department Bomb Squad Unit took possession of the weapon. Officials are working on disposing of it safely.
