PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The midterm elections are just two weeks away, which means the deadline to request a mail-in ballot in Pennsylvania and New Jersey is just one week away.
Pennsylvania Secretary of State Al Schmidt has encouraged voters to apply for a mail-in ballot as soon as possible.
“An important reminder to those Pennsylvanians who wish to vote by mail,” he said, “the deadline to apply to vote by mail is Oct. 27.”
That’s also the deadline in New Jersey. Delaware has early voting, which starts in two days, but the state still allows mail-in voting only for those not able to go to the polls on Election Day.
According to the United States Postal Service, completed ballots should be in the mail by Oct. 27, but Philadelphia City Commissioner Seth Bluestein has recommended using a drop box.
“We’re getting pretty close to Election Day and the commissioners just opened up our 37th and 38th drop boxes,” he said.
Bluestein stressed taking care when filling out the ballot. The commissioners have already identified hundreds of “deficient” ballots — with no signature, no secrecy envelope or no ID verification — that won’t be counted unless they’re fixed by Election Day. A list of those ballots is available to view here.
