PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Delaware State Police have arrested a Maryland man in connection to several assaults in Delaware that left an officer fighting for his life.

Randon Wilkerson, 30, has been charged with attempted murder and assault for a series of attacks that also left an elderly couple with serious injuries.

Delmar Police say Cpl. Keith Heacook responded alone to a call about a fight at a house early Sunday morning. When Heacook arrived, he got into a fight with Wilkerson.

Officers later found Heacook unconscious. Authorities say he suffered significant head injuries. He is in critical condition at a trauma center in Baltimore.

Police say Wilkerson also assaulted a 73-year-old man and a 76-year-old woman living across the street.

Online court records indicate that Wilkerson has a long criminal history in Maryland and that the attacks occurred on his birthday.
