South Jersey man charged in car crash that killed Lower Merion High School principal

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A New Jersey man has been charged in the November car crash that killed the principal of Lower Merion High School.

According to Camden County authorities, 54-year-old Azuka Ossai of Pine Hill is charged with second-degree vehicular homicide in the death of 51-year-old Sean Hughes, of Harleysville, Pennsylvania.

Hughes was taking his 13-year-old son to a soccer game the morning of Nov. 13, 2021, when police say his SUV collided with Ossai’s SUV at Fleming Pike and Hays Road in Winslow Township. Hughes died later that morning. His son was not seriously injured.

Prosecutors say Ossai was speeding and blew a stop sign, causing the deadly crash.

He has been released from police custody pending a court date.

​​Hughes served as principal of Lower Merion High for 14 years. He also worked as a teacher and athletic director.

The tragedy rocked the Lower Merion community, where Hughes was adored by students, staff and parents. He is survived by his wife and three children.
