PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Kennett Township police say a 59-year-old man was drunk and had methamphetamine in his system when he crashed his Dodge Challenger in January and killed his passenger.

Kevin Keating, of Hockessin, Delaware, is charged with homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence.


The crash happened around 5 p.m. on Jan. 14 on Gap Newport Pike in Kennett Township, near the Delaware border.

Witnesses told police that a 2021 Dodge Challenger Hellcat was speeding and swerved into the oncoming lane of traffic before veering back into its lane. It then went off the road, hitting trees and a telephone pole and spinning at least twice in the air.

The front seat passenger, 52-year-old Christopher Blevins, was killed.

Police said Keating told them he was driving and had lost control.

The affidavit of probable cause says witnesses who know Keating told police that when he got out of the car, he said, “I think I killed Chris.”

Keating told police he had four drinks, the affidavit says, but when asked what he had, he said “three shots and two beers.”

Charging documents say a preliminary roadside breath test measured Keating’s blood-alcohol content at .183 — more than twice the legal limit.

He refused a blood test, so police had to get a warrant, and blood wasn’t drawn until four and a half hours later. That came back at .119 and also showed methamphetamine in his system.

Keating’s preliminary hearing is scheduled for Sept. 23.
