PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Ramon Rodriguez-Vazquez, the 36-year-old man Philadelphia Police charged for shooting an officer in the neck during a traffic stop over the weekend in Kensington has a history of shooting at law enforcement, per a police report from more than a decade ago.
In July 2011, Rodriguez-Vazquez and a 24-year-old accomplice held a victim at gunpoint as they were trying to steal a white Nissan Pathfinder from a parking garage in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico.
The pair was interrupted by two agents from Puerto Rican law enforcement and rather than surrender, police say they began shooting at the agents.
Rodriguez-Vazquez and his accomplice were eventually arrested and taken into custody along with a 9mm revolver. Both were charged with attempted murder, carjacking, having and damaging stolen property, and a weapons offense.
They eventually pled guilty to six charges that equated to larceny, gun possession and multiple shooting offenses, and Rodriguez-Vazquez was sentenced to four-and-a-half years in prison.
Law enforcement sources said Rodriguez-Vazquez was also hit with a charge in 2016 related to contraband.
Officials continue to ask the public for prayers as the officer Rodriguez-Vazquez shot is still fighting for his life in the hospital. His family has asked that he not be named.
