PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting in the city’s Fairhill section that left one man dead.

Police were called to the 2900 block of Lawrence Street around 6 p.m. for a domestic incident. The caller reported that a man had a gun.

When officers arrived at the scene, they said a 40-year-old man exited the property and started firing toward the officers. First Deputy Commissioner John Stanford said officers then attempted to take cover and began exchanging gunfire.

Stanford said the man then got inside the police car, closed the door and continued firing the gun as officers approached him. Officers fired back and that’s when police said the man got out of the police car and got on the ground.

Police say they apprehended the man and took him to the hospital, where he died.

No officers or people nearby were reported injured. An investigation is underway stay with KYW throughout the night as this story develops.
