PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — New charges have been filed against a Philadelphia man whose 2-year-old son died of what investigators say was a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Jorddan Thorton, 27, is now facing a charge of involuntary manslaughter.

Thorton was charged with endangering the welfare of a child last month, after his 2-year-old son, Julius, died of a head wound.

Police were called to the Middletown Township apartment on Dec. 2. According to the criminal complaint, Thorton initially told police his son was jumping on the bed when he fell and hit his head, cracking his skull.

However, the Bucks County District Attorney’s Office said its investigation found the boy got ahold of Thorton’s loaded handgun on Dec. 2 and shot himself.

While searching the apartment, detectives found a loaded handgun registered in Thorton’s name on the floor, at the foot of the bed. Detectives also said the bottom drawer of a dresser next to the bed was open.

Thornton had told police there were guns in the apartment, but they were all put away in drawers.

A doctor also said the boy’s injury was consistent with a gunshot wound.
