PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The Philadelphia Police Department is investigating a deadly shooting in Old City. A man was killed in a barrage of bullets at 3rd and Chestnut streets on Monday night.

Police say, around 9:30 p.m., a 25-year-old man, identified as Jhalil Shands of North Philadelphia, was walking with his girlfriend in front of the Science History Institute when a minivan pulled up.

"Four males exited, walked right up to this victim and began firing multiple shots," said Chief Inspector Scott Small.

At least 27 shots were fired, according to investigators, as the victim was targeted.

"We’re being told by several witnesses that all four perpetrators that exited the minivan had weapons and were firing these weapons directly at this victim," Small added.

The victim’s girlfriend was not hit by any of the gunfire. The popular restaurant Buddakan has outdoor seating on the block, and police say it is remarkable that no one else was hurt.

"People sitting outside, just enjoying the weather, having a drink and having a meal. Although it’s a tragedy we have someone shot and killed, we’re actually very fortunate there were not additional shooting victims," Small said.

Police said the four shooters got away in the van, which may have been gold or silver, with Maryland license plates.

This shooting was part of a violent day in Philadelphia. Police said three other people were killed, and several others were wounded in separate shootings on Monday.

Police say there have been 125 homicides in the city this year, which is a 29% increase compared to the same time last year.
