PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Police in Montgomery County said a 17-year-old girl was duped into thinking she was getting into an Uber.
Lansdale police said back in April, 38-year-old Ryan Applegate stopped on Main Street and told the girl he was the driver who a friend had ordered for her.
The girl got into the car. Police said Applegate held her hand, grabbed her thigh, and tried to kiss her.
He dropped her off at the right place, but days later, he messaged her on Snapchat and asked her to smoke pot with him, officials said.
Chief Ryan Devlin said this case needs to serve as a warning.
“Parents should be aware of where their children are,” he told NBC10. “They should make sure that their cellphones are charged, that they know who their driver is, they know the vehicle is picking them up, they know which license plate is on the vehicle.”
Applegate is charged with indecent assault and false imprisonment.
