PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A man is dead after authorities said he fired at police officers on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway.
The Parkway is shut down between 20th and 22nd streets.
Around 11 a.m. Friday, authorities responded to the area for a report of a man with a gun.
Officers set up a large perimeter to keep a safe distance, as the man was in a wide-open grassy median. They spoke to the man through a bullhorn and ordered him to drop his weapon, but he did not comply.
At some point, the man fired his weapon.
Two officers — a SEPTA police officer and a Philadelphia police officer — returned fire, each firing once.
The man was struck twice. He was taken to the hospital, where he died.
No one else was injured.
Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel said they are investigating whether the incident was suicide by cop.
