Man shoots ex, himself inside Germantown home, police say

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Investigators believe a man shot and wounded his ex in Germantown overnight, then took his own life.

Around 4 a.m. Friday at a home on Milne Street, near Roosevelt Boulevard, police and paramedics found 26-year-old Yamad Nyceer Betterson and a 25-year-old woman, both shot, on the second floor. Betterson was pronounced dead on the scene.

The woman was shot multiple times and was taken to the hospital, where she is in critical but stable condition.

"This may be an attempted murder-suicide," said Chief Inspector Scott Small, "based on witness accounts and based on the crime scene."

There were seven other people in the home when this happened, including five children, the youngest just 9 months old.

"They were involved in a relationship at one time," Small said. "They have several children together. We don't believe either of these two individuals lived at this location."

Police said the woman was visiting family at the home. It's unclear why the man was there.
