PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A man who had been shot to death was found inside an SUV engulfed in flames overnight in North Philadelphia, police said.

Around 12:30 a.m. Thursday, police responded to a report of a person with a gun in an alley behind Malta Street, near Cayuga Street, in Juniata Park.

There, officers discovered a burgundy Dodge Durango that was on fire, and in the driver’s seat was a 45-year-old man who had been shot in the head, police said. Medics pronounced him dead.

Police are trying to figure out who was involved and what the motive was. No arrests have been made.

Jeffrey Smith, who lives a block away, was surprised that this happened here.

“The neighborhood is very nice. The people are nice. But it’s the people that don’t live in the neighborhood that come through and do those things,” he said.

Family members of the victim said he lived outside the city, and they weren’t sure what he was doing in Juniata Park. He had been a victim of gun violence recently, so investigators are trying to see if the incidents are connected.
