CHESTER, P.A. (KYW Newsradio) — A 35-year-old man is in the hospital after police in Chester shot him last night responding to a domestic incident.
Authorities said it was around 11:30 Wednesday night when the man shot at police near 21st and Edgemont Streets near the Chester Rural Cemetery and not far from Widener University.
Officers returned fire and struck the man, who was taken to the hospital. His condition remains unknown. The officers were unhurt in the incident.
In a brief statement, Delaware County District Attorney Jack Stollsteimer said “that officers involved were fired upon and justifiably return(ed) fire in their own defense,” but did not give any further information about the shooting.
Detectives from the District Attorney’s Special Investigation Unit are “conducting an independent investigation.”
Officials said the man at the center of the shooting is expected to be charged with aggravated assault on law enforcement.
