PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Police said a man who was shot in the face in East Germantown tried to drive himself to the hospital.
It happened shortly after midnight near Germantown Avenue and Church Lane.
The 39-year-old man was sitting in a Cadillac with his girlfriend when someone walked up and fired 14 shots at the car.
The man was hit in the cheek, but somehow the woman wasn’t injured.
“Unknown how she didn’t get hit,” said Philadelphia Police Capt. Timothy Stephan. “Luckily, by the grace of God, the driver was the only person struck inside that vehicle.”
According to a preliminary investigation, an unknown man had approached their car and told them, “You can’t be sitting back here.” The couple left but returned about 30 minutes later. That’s when the shots were fired.
The man tried to drive himself to the hospital. He got about five blocks down Germantown Avenue to Collom Street, where he waved down an officer who was directing traffic. The officer then took the man to the hospital in his patrol car.
The shooter was seen running into an alleyway. Police are checking surveillance video to try to identify him.
