PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A man was shot and killed in his West Philadelphia backyard Sunday night after he heard shouting and stepped outside to check out the commotion, police said.

Police say two people opened fire just before 11:30 p.m. on the 900 block of North 47th Street in the Mill Creek neighborhood. When officers arrived at the scene, they found the 48-year-old man on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds to the head.

Inspector D.F. Pace told our newsgathering partners at NBC10 they aren't sure if he was ambushed or if he interrupted some sort of fight, but he was struck multiple times at close range.

"The home itself is pretty much surrounded by open land," Pace said. "And the persons responsible, the perpetrators could have come in from any angle, frankly, so there's still a lot of unanswered questions with respect to where they came from and which way they fled and whether or not a vehicle was involved."

The victim's children were inside the home at the time, but none of them were hurt.

Police say they are still investigating, and no arrests have been made.
