PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Authorities are investigating the shooting death of a man along I-95 at the hands of a Philadelphia police officer early Monday morning.
City officials say around 1 a.m., on the I-95 south ramp near Philadelphia International Airport, an airport unit patrol officer saw a man who said he had been stabbed. So, the officer called for an ambulance and backup.
While they waited, officials say, the two got into a tussle, and the officer tried to subdue the 36-year-old man with a taser, but it didn’t work.
They say when a second unit got to the scene, the officer tried again, but again the taser didn’t work.
Officials say the officer in that second unit ended up firing his gun at the 36-year-old man several times, striking him dead.
That officer, 53 years old with 28 years in the department, has been placed on administrative duty, as per department policy.
Police say neither officer on scene was wearing a body camera.
Internal affairs, the officer-involved shooting investigation group and the District Attorney’s Office are each carrying out separate investigations.
