PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Philadelphia police are investigating a shooting in a West Oak Lane apartment building that left a man dead. Officers had to carry the victim down three floors to get him out of the building and to the hospital.
Police were called for a report of gunshots in the area of Ogontz Avenue, near Middleton Street, around 11 p.m. Tuesday.
Officers went into one of the units on the third floor and found a 54-year-old man on a mattress.
“He was suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to his torso, his hip, his lower back and leg,” said Chief Inspector Scott Small. “He was conscious, but he was in a lot of pain.”
Officers carried the victim down three flights of stairs to exit the property. Medics rushed him to the hospital, where he died shortly before 6 a.m. Wednesday.
Investigators recovered six 9mm cartridge cases from the scene.
A motive wasn’t immediately clear to police. Three people were in the building at the time, and they told police that they heard the gunshots but did not see who pulled the trigger. They were taken to police headquarters for further questioning.
