PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The 18-year-old Fox Chase man who was charged with stabbing his ex-girlfriend at a SEPTA station earlier this summer has been ordered to stand trial on murder charges.
Prosecutors say Gilbert Newton III stabbed his ex-girlfriend, 18-year-old Morgan McCaffery, more than 30 times in the parking lot of the SEPTA Meadowbrook Station on July 27.
The knives recovered at the scene matched a set in Newton’s kitchen in his home on the 8500 block of Ferndale Street, according to authorities.
In testimony at Newton’s preliminary hearing, a detective said Newton told him he stabbed his ex-girlfriend and “didn’t want to be in this world anymore.”
But Newton’s attorney, Charles Peruto Jr., argued unsuccessfully that the stabbing may have been a robbery, adding there was no evidence presented tying his client to the murder.
