Cop fatally shoots knife-wielding man during attempted burglary in Camden County, officials say

HADDON TOWNSHIP, N.J. (KYW Newsradio) — New Jersey state officials are investigating after police shot and killed a knife-wielding man during an attempted burglary in Camden County Sunday morning.

Haddon Township police were called to an apartment complex on West Crystal Lake Avenue in Westmont around 1 a.m. Sunday.

When officers arrived, they encountered a man armed with a knife, according to the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office. During their interaction in a stairwell, an officer fired his gun and struck the man. He was taken to the hospital, where he died.

A knife was found at the scene, investigators said.

Officials have not yet identified the man who was killed or the officer involved.

The New Jersey Attorney General’s Office always conducts investigations when someone dies during an encounter with law enforcement, per state law.
