PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The Marine Mammal Stranding Center in Brigantine says two young seals stranded just days apart are on the mend. But as the work continues, so does the need for donations.
On February 4, the center found a seriously injured harbor seal on the beach in Strathmere. The center's founding director Bob Schoelkopf says the 1-year-old pup had a large wound under its front flipper.
"The wound also extended into the flipper itself where one of the bones were exposed," he said.
The pup is doing fine now, he added.
And just last week, an underweight 4-week-old grey seal was discovered with minor injuries in Belmar. After much care, she's OK, too.
"They're eating about two and a half pounds per feeding three times a day, so that's a bit expensive with the fish. We don't go out and catch the fish, we have to buy commercial," Schoelkopf said.
From this specialty diet, much needed surgeries and upkeep is needed.
"Everything that we need including gas to go get the animals is paid by donation," he added.
