EXCLUSIVE: Morgan McCaffery's family shines a light on dangerous teenage relationships

Heard first on KYW Newsradio

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — One year ago, Morgan McCaffery, a recent high school graduate, was found stabbed to death in the Meadowbrook train station parking lot. Her former boyfriend has been charged.

Her family wants to focus on how she lived and the lives she touched, and to do all they can to call attention to potentially dangerous teenage relationships through the Morgan's Light Foundation.

"She was popular, outgoing. She was so goofy but she was so compassionate. She was the love of our family's life," said her godmother, Deneen McCaffery, the foundation's executive director.

She said that at first she could not wrap her head around what happened.

"I'll never forget the call and just falling to the ground and saying, 'No, what do you mean? Not Morgan,'" she said.

"We decided because of the situation that we had to do something. This area of young women being in toxic relationships is not talked about."

Now, they are starting to organize events to promote awareness.

There are several events scheduled in Wildwood, New Jersey, this weekend. One is for parents, at Keenan's in North Wildwood on Friday night. The next day, teenagers and young adults are especially encouraged to join them at 17th Street Beach in Wildwood from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

"Talk to us. Get some information. Grab our resource cards, koozies, frisbees. t-shirts and other items as a reminder to open up the conversations," said McCaffery.
