PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, can occur at any age, but it is underdiagnosed in adults.

It is somewhat easier to diagnose in children than in adults. Although not always present, one of the obvious signs is conduct and behavioral issues associated with increased activity.

However, ADHD is far more than hyperactivity. There are numerous other symptoms, including inattention, distractibility and forgetfulness.

Many adults grew up at a time when symptoms of ADHD were not recognized and treatment options were not readily available. These adults may continue to have difficulty focusing. They may have gone through several jobs as a result.

The good news is that, if adults are diagnosed, they can actually lessen their symptoms with treatment. The first step is simply recognizing that ADHD can occur in adulthood.
