Medical Report: Common sense on the Fourth of July can keep you out of the ER

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The Fourth of July is a great opportunity for family and friends to get together, but it is also a busy time in hospital emergency departments.

When doctors worry about injuries on the holiday, top of the list is injury from fireworks. It is essential to be careful — fireworks are potentially dangerous, especially in the wrong hands.

The results are far too common and predictable: burn injuries and damaged body parts. The combination of fireworks, large gatherings, inexperience and the presence of alcohol is a recipe for disaster.

The other two concerns have to do with alcohol and driving. If you are going out with your family, make certain that you do not consume alcohol if you are behind the wheel.

Remember: If you are traveling today make certain everyone has a seatbelt and the little ones are in car seats. Common sense will help keep you out of the ER.
