PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The COVID-19 pandemic has had a dramatic impact on both physicians and nurses. This is not unexpected.

A survey performed in December of 2021 revealed that, of the physicians and advanced-practice clinicians surveyed, 40% planned to leave their professions. Among nurses, it was 50%.

In the following year, more than 340,000 health care professionals left the workforce. According to an article in the Journal of the American Medical Association, there needs to be a plan in place to emphasize a culture of wellbeing, or the exodus will continue and health care shortages will increase.

Mental health, wellbeing and support services for health care professionals must be emphasized.
