Medical Report: Do Zoom meetings dull worker creativity?

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Are people more creative when they work together in the same room than when they work together using collaborative conferencing software like Zoom or Teams? It is a good question, with so many workers having been meeting remotely for the better part of two years.

A researcher from McGill University, who has taken a look at this and reviewed other studies that examined human behavior while interacting with others by video chat, says he has found a link between creativity and teleconferencing.

What he has found is that people who are in web-based conversations tend to spend most of their time focusing directly on the person they are talking to, and when all together in a room, people tend to look around far more often.

According to the researcher, the studies found that teleconferencing actually dulls creativity. It has been shown that people look away when they are trying to think out of the box and be creative.
