PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A new study finds that exercise training can not only help with weight loss, but it also helps with a common problem called fatty liver. KYW Medical Editor Dr. Brian McDonough has more.

We know that regular exercise is good for our overall health, and there is no doubt that there are benefits for heart and overall strength and flexibility. There is new information from the American Journal of Gastroenterology that has found that exercise helps reverse early damage to  the liver, called fatty liver disease.

The study showed that people who participated in exercise training were able to reduce the amount of fat in their livers by 30%. This is very important because fatty liver is a predictor of future liver problems.

The amount of exercise was 150 minutes per week of moderately stressful movement, like brisk walking, or 75 minutes of vigorous walking.
