PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Pharmacists have a more expanded role in health care now than ever before, according to the National Alliance of State Pharmacy Associations, an organization that monitors pharmacists throughout the country.
According to their latest information, more than 10 states are now permitting pharmacists to test for common health problems, including sore throats and urinary tract infections. In this capacity they test for these conditions and prescribe antibiotics if needed.
In many cases the pharmacists have what is called a collaborative agreement with a physician, but since the pandemic, several states have eliminated that requirement. Those who support the trend cite convenience and cost as key factors.
