PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Have you ever returned home from the doctor's office feeling like you didn't get your questions answered? If so, you are not alone — and there are some simple steps you can take to avoid that feeling.
Going to a doctor appointment isn't always easy. For many people, it is a rare occurrence, and they can easily be overwhelmed. Sometimes a physician may seem rushed or distracted — or may use medical jargon that patients find difficult to understand. The experience can be a waste of time.
A couple of simple steps could make a big difference. First, prepare for your appointment like you are preparing for a meeting: Write down questions that are important to you. And if you don't understand the answer, ask for clarification.
You also should be examined. Do not be afraid to ask any question about the examination or when you should be seen again.
Remember that you are the consumer, and the doctor-patient relationship should be a partnership.
