Medical Report: Healthy habits are the key to strong immunity

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Our immune systems are fighting potential infections every day of our lives, but can we build super-powered immune systems?

Every day, as we go out to face the challenges of life, our immune systems fight numerous battles as well. All sorts of pathogens attack us constantly. Fortunately we win an overwhelming number of those battles.

Occasionally an invader, like COVID-19, outguns many of us and we need vaccines, medications, and whatever we can come up with to help our immune systems. But how can we strengthen that protection on our own? In many cases it’s fighting through infections — we get sick for a few days, and our antibodies get stronger.

We have many cells to fight infection, but the key is keeping our bodies as healthy as possible to help boost the immune system. The best ways: good diet, plenty of exercise and the avoidance of toxins like alcohol and tobacco. One other key element — try to reduce stress. Study after study shows the damage caused by stress.
