PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — According to a new study in the Journal of the American Medical Association, nearly one-third of pharmacies in the United States have closed in the past 15 years.
Like many local businesses, larger chain pharmacies are replacing local pharmacies. Large chains are well equipped to handle community needs, but in economically challenged areas, pharmacies are often not replaced, leaving them as pharmacy deserts.
Many in these areas either can't get their medications (both over-the-counter and prescription) or receive advice from the pharmacist about how to best use them.
