PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Several new studies have supported a well-known diet as a key way to help prevent heart disease and cancer.
The Mediterranean diet has been studied extensively because of its impact on overall health. Numerous books and articles have been written about it, but the diet is more of an overall lifestyle approach to eating than a rigid guide.
The key is eating smaller amounts of animal-based foods and emphasizing plant-based foods, such as vegetables, beans, whole grains and nuts — and using olive oil as the major source of fat.
One other major part of the diet: Avoid highly processed foods.
