PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Between 2010 and 2017, the number of pregnant women with an opioid use disorder rose by 131%.

Although the data is a bit old, there is no reason to believe that things have gotten better. The abuse of drugs during pregnancy can have a dramatic impact on the development and health of an unborn baby.

One of the most important ways to protect the baby is to provide care early in pregnancy for the expectant mother without stigma and with support to help reduce or eliminate drug use.

The earlier the intervention, the better.
