PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — There is no doubt that pets are a wonderful source of companionship. And the health benefits to pet owners are quite real. However, if you are thinking of bringing a pet home, there are certain things you should know first.
Some pets carry infections. Cats can transmit toxoplasmosis in their stools. This disease can harm your baby if you are pregnant, so make sure you have someone else change the litter box.
Also, be aware of salmonella bacteria that can be carried by frogs, turtles, lizards and many reptiles.
Finally there is no such thing as a 100% hypoallergenic dog. Keeping pets out of the bedroom and running an air purifier with a HEPA filter can help. About 70% of American households have pets — and that is a great thing — but it is smart to plan ahead.
