PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) The National Institutes of Health is beginning a trial study to understand the effectiveness and safety of a nasal COVID-19 vaccine.

Unlike in the early days of the pandemic, scientists now have the luxury of taking time to study the vaccine. At present time, there are several effective vaccines available that require injection.

The nasal vaccine would provide an option without the need for an injection. The research is part of a $5 billion initiative called Project NextGen to create new weapons against COVID-19.

In the first part of the study, 60 people between the ages of 18 and 64 will be given the vaccine. All study participants will be required to have been vaccinated and boosted twice.

This study is in the early stages, but is a clear signal that health officials anticipate COVID-19 to be with us for a while — much like the flu.
