Medical Report: Suppressing your emotions could be deadly

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — For many years, it was a traditional male stereotype: Suppress emotions, compete at all times, display aggressive behavior, take risks whenever possible.

All of these traits can be helpful on occasion, but not when consistently embraced.

According to recent scientific research, people who score high in these traditionally masculine traits may be almost twice as likely to commit suicide.

One of the biggest reasons is that they are less likely to ask for help when it comes to mental health concerns like anxiety and depression.

Most major studies have been done on men, but women are now included. Experts agree that we don't need to wait for study results to recommend a more balanced approach.
