PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Neighbors and family members held a vigil for Sam Collington, the Temple University student who was shot and killed Sunday afternoon one block from the campus.
"Sam played such an important role in our community that it would be an injustice if we all didn’t show up," said Allie, one of Collington's classmates who joined hundreds at Interboro High School in Prospect Park to remember him. He graduated from there in 2018 before attending Temple.
"I knew it would be a big turn out because he touched so many peoples lives," she added.
Allie described Collington, 21, as kind, smart, and not someone who took himself too seriously.
"He was really funny, so I knew there would be a lot of laughs and smiles," said Allie.
The Mobley family said Collington was a product of his loving family and their small but strong community.
"I think it’s very important that a young man as driven as he was gets remembers in an important way," said Rob Mobley.
Collington was fatally shot Sunday afternoon while unpacking his car.
Police say it was an attempted carjacking.
Latif Williams, 17, turned himself in to police and faces murder charges in the case. Despite numerous arrests, he has never faced prosecution in those cases.
